WILKINS CHALGREN AGAR
Wilkins-Chalgren Agar is a solid medium for the cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms in a laboratory setting. The medium does not require supplementation with blood to support bacterial growth. Enzymatic Digests of Casein and Gelatin provide amino acids, peptides, and minerals. Yeast Extract supplies essential B-complex vitamins and other growth factors, including purines and pyrimidines. Dextrose is the main fermentable carbohydrate. Sodium Chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium. L-Arginine contributes to growth of Eubacterium lentum. Sodium Pyruvate enhances growth of Veillonella spp. and degrades reactive oxygen species. Hemin (X Factor) and Vitamin K are added as essential growth factors for several species of anaerobes. Agar is the gelifying agent.
