Although traditionally associated with classical microbiology, their use is still essential even in many of the most modern alternative techniques, since pre-enrichment is a critical phase to ensure the recovery and detection of pathogens.

It is well established that the enrichment step is especially critical in food safety, even more so than in other industries. Pathogens like Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. require highly sensitive detection methods, which is why protocols always start with specific enrichment media that have been carefully refined over the years to ensure the best possible recovery and reliability.

That said, even though enrichment media might seem like a mature technology, there’s always room for improvement.
