LBS Agar Base is used for the selective isolation and enumeration of Lactobacilli. Peptone and Yeast Extract provide nitrogenous sources, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Tween 80 supplies essential fatty acids and enhances nutrient uptake. Ammonium Citrate and Sodium Acetate inhibit the growth of microorganisms other than Lactobacilli, including Streptococci and molds. The addition of Acetic Acid lowers the pH, thus restricting the growth of other microorganisms and enhancing the growth of Lactobacilli. Agar is the gelifying agent.
